An update from our ACPS Superintendent Dr. Annette Bennett

An update from our ACPS Superintendent Dr. Annette Bennett

Throughout this pandemic, we have all been looking forward to the time we might begin the conversation about reopening schools in Virginia.  The Governor's announcement today allows us to actively develop a plan to do that in the safest way possible.

The documents released by the Va Department of Education, in coordination with the Governor's announcement, are the result of multiple stakeholder groups that have been working since March.  These guidance documents provide information, recommendations, and guidelines.  Each division will be required to develop both health and instructional plans as our state moves through the phases of reopening and our students move back into our classrooms.

As you know, ACPS began in-person learning this week with our Community-Based Summer School Program.   We have also begun to organize our own Reopen and Recovery Taskforce for Phase III.  We will be using the VDOE guidance documents in each step of this planning.

As you heard from Governor Northam and Dr. Lane, reopening our school buildings will happen slowly to ensure that health guidelines are observed.  Our Reopen and Recovery Taskforce will work with stakeholders through committees and subcommittees to address all areas of the work related to reopening. There are many factors to consider, many questions to answer, and many tasks to be completed in the coming weeks as we develop our plan.  As our plans are solidified, I will update ACPS employees and the community. Your patience and continued support is greatly appreciated.
