Sports News! 2019-2020

The 2019-20 Winter sports regular seasons finished on February 18th. Here is a recap of how the teams did this season.

The Girls basketball team finished the regular season with an 11-11 overall record. Senior Shaniya Johnson scored her 1,000th point against Heritage High school on 2/12/20, and has also set a new school record for career for free throw attempts.

The Boys basketball team finished the regular season with a 12-8 overall record. They are currently ranked 7th in Region 2C and hosted Alleghany High School on Monday Feb. 24th. The boys defeated Alleghany in overtime by a score of 60 to 55. They went on to play Radford High School on Tuesday Feb. 5th. Unfortunately, the team lost that game by a score of 73-45. The team ended the year with an overall record of 13-9.

The Girls and Boys swim teams had a great Regional. On Feb. 6th the swim teams competed in their Region 2C Championships at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. The boy’s team finished 4th overall, while the girls team finished 7th overall. Charlie Drinkard and Catherine Thomas qualified in individual events for the State Championships, which were being held at the Swim RVA-Collegiate Aquatics Center in Richmond on Thursday Feb. 20th. Also advancing to the State Championship was the boys 200-meter Medley Relay and 200-meter Freestyle Relay teams of Drinkard, Gabe Thompson, Conner Fulcher, and Bennett Goodman. The girls 200-meter Medley Relay team of Thomas, Tatum Harris, Kirsten Moore, and Berkeley Jamerson also qualified for the State Championship. The Boys Swim team finished 17th and the Girls finished 19th overall at the State Championship. Freshman Catherine Thomas placed 4th in the Girls’ 100-meter Butterfly and 6th in the 100-meter Freestyle, setting new school records in both events. Freshman Charlie Drinkard finished 10th in the 100-meter Backstroke and 12th in the 200-meter Individual Medley, also setting new Appomattox team records. Freshman Bennett Goodman took 12th in the 100-meter Butterfly. The girls Medley Relay team of Lanie Midkiff, Kirsten Moore, Tatum Harris, and Berkeley Jamerson finished 14th. The boys Medley Relay team of Charlie Drinkard, Conner Fulcher, Bennett Goodman, and Gabe Thomson took 13th place. The boys’ 200-meter Freestyle team of Drinkard, Goodman, Thompson and Parker Cheatham placed 11th.

The Wrestling team competed in the Region 2C wrestling tournament on Saturday February 15th at James River High School. Four ACHS wrestlers qualified for wrestled at the State Championships on Feb 21st and 22nd at the Salem Civic Center. Trey Martin was the State Runner-Up, Toby Bryant and Frank Gonzin both took 5th place and Gage Meador was a state qualifier.

Also, on Friday, February 21st, the Appomattox County High School Track competed in their Region 2C championships at Roanoke College. The ACHS track team has numerous athletes competing in the Regional Championship, with some already having met the State Championship qualifying standards. The State Championship was held on Friday and Saturday Feb. 28th and 29th at Roanoke College. The girls team placed 8th out of 38 teams while the boys team place 17th out of 38 teams. The following athletes made the All-State Indoor Track team for their performances: Amyah Bolar (55-meter dash, 4 x 200 meter relay), Nadiah Abdussalaam (High Jump, Pole Vault, 4 x 200 meter relay), Nyla Napier (Long Jump, Triple Jump, 4 x 200 meter relay), Makaila Collins (Pole Vault), Tatyana Watts (4 x 200 meter relay), Manny Davis (Long Jump, Triple Jump), and Tyreese Seal (High Jump).

The Scholastic Bowl team competed in the Region 2C sub-region on Feb. 1st, and advanced to the Region 2C Championship which was held on Feb. 12th.The team lost 2 close matches to Glenvar and Gretna and did not qualify for the State Championships.

Spring sports can begin practicing/try-outs on Feb. 24th. Spring sports teams include JV and Varsity Baseball, JV and Varsity Softball, JV and Varsity Girls Soccer, JV and Varsity Boys Soccer, Outdoor Track, Girls and Boys Tennis. The regular season games can begin the week of Monday March 16th. In order to participate in spring sports a completed VHSL physical must be on file with the Athletic Director or Athletic Trainer, or must be turned into the head coach at the time of tryouts. Along with the physical, the student athlete must be academically eligible to participate. This means that they must have passed 3 out of 4 block classes (or the equivalent for whole year classes) in the FIRST SEMESTER.
