Appomattox High School FFA members recently participated in a national
program designed to promote agricultural literacy among school children. As part
of National Agricultural Literacy Day, FFA members read the book Logan’s
Greenhouse. In a coordinated effort, 102 FFA members visited 21 Appomattox
Primary School classrooms to speak with young students. National Agricultural
Literacy Day is a special project of the Farm Bureau Agriculture in the Classroom
program. Locally, the initiative was sponsored by the Appomattox County Farm
Bureau Women’s Committee.
FFA members enjoyed reminiscing about their primary school days while
visiting classrooms and reading aloud to students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, first,
and second grade. A total of 360 APS students learned about agriculture and the
fruit and vegetable industry during the event. As part of the activity, each student
made a miniature greenhouse and planted carrot seeds. FFA members also
made manipulatives for students to learn about different vegetables. Afterward,
sixteen books were donated to APS teachers to keep in their classroom libraries.
