The Appomattox County High School girl’s cross country earned the Dogwood District title Tuesday, dethroning Galileo High School, which previously held the title for more than a decade. The win comes one year after the girls team came in second to Galileo behind by almost 20 points.

Sophomore Elly Nash earned Dogwood District Runner of the Year honors for the second year in a row, winning the race in a time of 21:37. Nash crossed the finish line more than a minute ahead of the second-place finisher from Galileo. Sophomore Shylynn Randolph, and freshmen Raegan Wells and Martha Robindolph earned All-District honors finishing in the top 15 out of 45 runners. Randolph took 7th, followed by Wells in 8th and Robindolph in 12th. Making for the tightest pack finish this season seniors Julie Goodman and Bella Perry and freshman Olivia Tucker all crossed the line in the top 30. Goodman earned 21st, followed by Tucker in 26th and Perry in 28th. Together the ladies earned just 41 points, nudging out Galileo with 43 points and Nelson County with 50 points.

In the boys race, the Raiders battled Galileo and Chatham all the way to the finish line, claiming third place and a bevy of All-District honors. Sophomore Lucas Hunter, and seniors Clay Hamilton and Christian Goodman, finished among the top 15 out of 51 runners. Hunter and Hamilton led the Raiders through the finish line chute taking 6th and 7th respectively. Hunter crossed the line in 20:14 with Hamilton matching him nearly step for step to come in 20:16. Senior Christian Goodman stayed with the pack to win11th. Freshman Sam Detwiler came in 20th, with junior David Owen in 33rd and senior Matthew Thomas in 39th.

Both squads now move on to the 2A Region C Championships on Oct. 28 at Greenfield Recreation Park. The girls race takes off at 3 p.m. followed by the boys race at 3:45 p.m. Please come out to cheer them on!
