Career & Technical Education Academy Overview

Dual Enrollment CTE Classes for Seniors at the Lynchburg campus

A jumpstart for students into meaningful, high-wage, high-demand careers with college

credits which lead to credentials, certificates, or potentially an Associate’s Degree.

Requirements:

  • 12th Grade

  • Must have passed Algebra I

  • Health Science Pathways students require a “C” in Algebra II

  • Minimum 2.0 GPA

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA for Health Science Pathways

  • Application must be completed and then students will be chosen by a selection committee

DUAL ENROLLMENT

Students who are interested in taking a Dual Enrollment course outside of the Early College Program are required to meet the following ACHS criteria prior to enrollment in a class. Note:

These criteria may exceed the college enrollment requirements:

  • Must be a Junior or Senior

  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 for academic courses

  • Have no more than 9 absences (excused or unexcused) in the previous semester

  • Have no major discipline referrals (administration recommendation)

  • Earn a “B” or better in the most recent advanced level preferred English course

  • Should have taken a minimum of Algebra II

Dual Enrollment coursework that is taken outside of the approved associate’s degree program (ACHS Early College Program) may only be weighted and/or computed in GPA and class rank if it meets the following criteria:

  1. The course fulfills a high school graduation requirement

  2. The course is taught in either the Fall or Spring Semesters (no summer courses)

Students may request to take Dual Enrollment courses if they have exhausted all of the coursework available in a given course sequence at the high school.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CVCC APPLICANTS

  • Students are required to have a 3.5 GPA or higher by the end of 9th grade in order to be eligible to apply by the middle of their 10th grade year.

  • Must complete Advanced English 10, Alg II, Geometry or Trig and Chemistry or Physics by end of 10th grade year.

  • Trigonometry is recommended to be completed by ACHS but not required by CVCC.

  • Should have a clear idea of what they would like to major in at college.

  • Be academically mature and self-motivated.

  • Be able to clearly state why you want to attend CVCC and what you hope to achieve by completing the program.

  • Students are encouraged to take the PSAT.

  • Must apply to CVCC and take the Math and English (VPT) placement tests with Mrs. Wingfield. This will be scheduled by the Counseling Department.

There are no more than two attempts to pass the VPT.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CENTRAL VA GOVENORS' SCHOOL APPLICANTS

Students must have a minimum 4.0 GPA at the time their application is due.

Must complete Advanced English 10, Alg II, Geometry or Trig and Chemistry or Physics by end of 10th grade year.

Have a strong passion for and high academic achievement in math and science, as is demonstrated in the student’s grades, SOL scores and PSAT scores.

Should be involved in special math/science projects, activities, and programs that are OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL. Governor’s School wants to see that you are going ABOVE and BEYOND what you’re exposed to here at school (students will be asked about this on their application and will be expected to go into detail).

Should achieve academic awards in math/science (also asked on application).

Have a clear reason for wanting to attend CVGS and be able to explain how attending

CVGS will assist him/her in his/her future career goals.

SOLs and PSAT scores are reviewed, be sure to take the PSAT test.

Must apply to CVCC and take the Math and English (VPT) placement tests with Mrs. Wingfield. This will be scheduled by the Counseling Department.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CENTRAL VA STEM GOVERNORS' SCHOOL APPLICANTS

Students are required to have a 3.5 GPA or higher by the end of 9th grade in order to be eligible to

apply by the middle of their 10th grade year.

Must complete Advanced English 10, Alg II, Geometry or Trig and Chemistry or Physics by end of 10th grade year. Should strive to have a C or higher in all courses. Students are encouraged to take the PSAT.

Have an interest in hands-on style learning.

Be academically mature, self-motivated, and organized.

Have a strong interest in an engineering-related career and be able to clearly state how STEM will be able to help him/her achieve his/her career goals.

Have participated in STEM-related activities, projects, and programs (volunteered, job-shadowed, assisted with engineering-type activities).

Must apply to CVCC and take the Math and English (VPT) placement tests with Mrs. Wingfield. This will be scheduled by the Counseling Department.

There are no more than two attempts to pass the VPT.

NURSE AIDE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Prerequisites: Successful Completion of Intro to Health and Medical Sciences & Medical Terminology (DE or high school class)

Age Requirement: Students must be 16 or older at the beginning of the Nurse Aide course.

Grade Requirement: Students must be a rising 11th or 12th grader to apply to this program.

Application Process

1. In the second semester of the school year, students will be notified that Nurse Aide Program applications are available in the Counseling Office.

2. Students must complete the application in its entirety.

  • a. Teacher Recommendation forms must be given to a science teacher and one other teacher of the student’s choosing.

  • b. Students are encouraged to give their teacher recommendation forms out at least a week ahead of the application deadline.

  • c. Students and parents/guardians must read the Joint Statement of the Department of Health and the Department of Health Professions On Impact of Criminal Convictions on Nursing Licensure or Certification and Employment in Virginia as well as the Barrier Crime Lists. A student and parent/guardian signature is required on the Acknowledgement form attached to the packet.

3. The short answer questions in the application are very important to answer clearly and with complete sentences. It is expected that students will be able to elaborate on their answers to give better understanding.

4. Students will be notified of their acceptance, denial, or waitlist status by letter during the school day.
