Appomattox County Adult Learning Center

Founded in 1989, the Appomattox County Adult Learning Center provides adults in our community with accessible, high-quality educational opportunities. Each year, approximately 100 students enroll for a variety of personal, academic, and professional goals. To meet these diverse needs, we offer a range of programs, including:

GED® (General Educational Development) Preparation
Comprehensive instruction to help students successfully earn their high school equivalency credential.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Classes focused on strengthening reading, writing, and math skills for adult learners at all levels.

Support for Beginning Readers
Individualized assistance to help adults build foundational literacy skills.

Our classes are free of charge and intentionally kept small to ensure personalized instruction and support.

Empowering Adult Learners

Students use the skills they gain in many meaningful ways. After earning their GED®, some continue their education at community colleges or technical and business schools. Others qualify for new employment opportunities, earn job promotions, or simply gain confidence in their daily lives. Whatever the goal, we are committed to helping learners take their next steps.

Appomattox County Public Schools provides a differentiated curriculum for identified gifted students in grades K-12 though the Advanced Learners Program (ALPs). A wide range of opportunities for academic extension are provided in the regular classroom. Math and Language Arts are the primary areas of service for identified ALPs students. The ALPs Program has two primary purposes. The first aim is to offer challenging academic opportunities that foster creativity, academic growth, higher level thinking skills, and problem solving. Secondly, the program supports classroom teachers as they meet the challenges of teaching students at all levels by creating a differentiated curriculum.

Summer Residential Governor’s Schools provide high school juniors and seniors with intensive educational experiences in visual and performing arts; humanities; medicine and health sciences; mathematics, science, and technology; or through mentorships in marine science, or engineering.

Each Summer Residential Governor’s School focuses on one special area of interest. Students live on a college or university campus for up to four weeks each summer. During this time, students are involved in classroom and laboratory work, field studies, research, individual and group projects and performances, and seminars with noted scholars, visiting artists, and other professionals. In the three mentorships, students are selected to work side-by-side with research scientists, physicians, and a variety of other professionals. A director and a student-life staff provide supervision of students 24 hours a day, throughout the program.

Appomattox County Public Schools' Alternative Education (Alt. Ed) model is one of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our staff works hard to make sure that all students’ educational needs and career goals are aligned so they are ready for their future. 

In addition to formal and informal assessments provided to students in their classrooms, our division requires several formative assessments of student achievement.

Raider Remote is the ACPS virtual education option created for the 2020-2021 school year. It is a blend of syncronous and asyncrounous lessons taught by ACPS teachers for students PreK-12 in our school division. Instruction is available in all core subjects and most electives. Virtual Virginia is a program supported by the Virginia Department of Education that allows schools throughout the Commonwealth to provide a variety of courses regardless of the size or teaching resources within a given division. Students are able to access a virtual classroom and curriculum that may not be available as a “live” class in their school due to staffing restrictions, a low number of course requests or a conflict in a student’s schedule for the class. In our division, an example of a class that we offer only through Virtual VA is Latin. Since we do not have a Latin teacher in our division, student may still have the opportunity to take this course via Virtual VA.

The Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) is a 2022 law (expanded in 2023) requiring local school boards to provide science- and evidence-based reading instruction for students in kindergarten through grade eight. It mandates approved curricula, regular student screening, targeted reading plans for struggling learners, and specialized reading staff. Further details are linked below..
